Thunderstorms and high winds on Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Plains caused a ground delay at Denver International Airport on Saturday, stopping hundreds of flights from leaving on time.
Federal Aviation Administration officials issued a ground delay for DIA as of 3 p.m. because of the storms. The alert was changed to a ground delay because of runway construction as of 6 p.m., with flights delayed an average of 91 minutes.
There were 408 DIA flight delays as of 6 p.m. and one canceled flight, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. United Airlines reported 148 delays, followed by SkyWest with 112 flight delays and Southwest Airlines reported 105 delays.
Severe thunderstorms could bring winds as high as 60 mph through Saturday night, mostly along and north of Interstate 70, according to the National Weather Service.
Southwest winds are also expected to increase throughout the day, with up to 40 mph gusts likely throughout the region.
