Hurricane Erin began to pull away from the North Carolina and Virginia coasts on Thursday and is expected to continue traveling northeastward across the Atlantic over the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said.
A storm surge warning was issued in North Carolina this morning, which is when there is a danger of life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland over the coastline. Erin did not cause much damage in North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Wednesday night. Outer Banks islands are still under mandatory evacuations, and North Carolina Highway 12, the primary road that connects the islands, is still closed because of flooding.

Local officials from Florida to Maine have also closed beaches and warned residents to stay out of the water over the next several days. “Beachgoers are cautioned against swimming at most U.S. East Coast beaches due to life-threatening surf and rip currents,” the hurricane center said.
Erin formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean last week, officially reaching hurricane status on Friday. It is the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season.

Police investigate shooting at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit

DETROIT – Detroit police are currently investigating a shooting at Henry Ford Hospital.
Police confirmed the investigation around 10:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2025.
The hospital is on lockdown, and the street outside is currently closed. Armed ATF agents are gearing up at the scene.
Police are trying to find out who the suspect is and where they are.
Sources tell Local 4 that this shooting occurred in the basement. They also tell us the shooting might not be random and may stem from a domestic dispute.
We spoke to Carmen, who is inside the hospital with a loved one who is having a procedure.

“I was sitting out on the west entrance in an area by the window, and we heard over the loudspeaker that there was a code blue in the basement,” she said. “Then we heard a lot of yelling, and it appeared a nurse was trying to clear the hallway by where I was sitting, and shuffled everyone in the hallway down to the waiting area that I was sitting in outside of the surgery center.”
Local 4 has a crew at the scene gathering more information.
There is no indication that this shooting is connected to the one that happened in the area earlier today.

Detroit police investigating deadly shooting near Henry Ford Hospital
DETROIT (FOX 2) – One man is dead and another receiving treatment after a shooting early Friday near Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
What we know:
According to police, the victims were riding in a vehicle in the area of W. Grand Boulevard and Linwood when someone pulled alongside them and started shooting around 5 a.m. It appears the victims continued driving on W. Grand, as when police arrived, they were stopped in the road outside the hospital.
The surviving victim received non-life-threatening injuries.
What we don’t know:
The identity of the shooter is unknown.

Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning with no strikeouts to earn the save in Thursday’s 6-3 win over the Yankees.
