United States women to close out 2025 with Italy friendly – sources

0

The United States women will host Italy in a friendly on Dec. 1 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, sources told ESPN.

U.S. Soccer is set to officially announce the match in the coming days.

“As we prepare for World Cup qualifying at the end of 2026, we want to play teams from all parts of the world with different styles and different strengths, so getting to play Italy, one of Europe’s up-and-coming teams, will be a great way to end the year,” said U.S. coach Emma Hayes.

“This has been a very productive year for our team, learning about each other while embracing our philosophies and standards, so we’re looking forward to two more games against a quality team to continue to grow.”

The game will mark a first friendly in Florida for the USWNT since 2023, when it defeated China 3-0 at Chase Stadium with goals from Sophia Wilson, Lindsey Heaps and Trinity Rodman. The team previously held a training camp in Fort Lauderdale in January 2025, but didn’t host a match.

Italy will enter the game after reaching the UEFA Women’s Euros semifinal, falling 2-1 to eventual winners England on an extra-time goal by Chloe Kelly in the 119th minute.

The 2025 Women’s Euros marked the first time that Italy reached the semifinal of the tournament since 1997.

The friendly against Italy will be the last match of 2025 for the USWNT.

UEFA announces update to Champions League squad regulations

0

Liverpool submitted their chosen ‘List A’ last week ahead of beginning a new European campaign by hosting Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Following a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee on Thursday, the governing body stated: “The Executive Committee approved an amendment to the 2025/26 UEFA men’s club competitions’ regulations to admit the temporary replacement of a maximum of one outfield player with long-term injury or illness during the league phase until matchday 6 included.

“The reasoning for the adaptation is to ensure that squad lists are not unfairly reduced and players are safeguarded from additional workload pressure.”

The Reds will also face Galatasaray, Eintracht Frankfurt, Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven and Internazionale during the first six matchdays, before concluding the league phase against Marseille and Qarabag in January.

Cork allocated €2m to support people leaving emergency accommodation

0

An additional €2m of targeted funding for social housing in Cork City to support people exiting emergency accommodation has been welcomed by Fine Gael Cork spokesperson Colm Burke, however the figures show Cork received far less funding than many other Irish cities.

Agreement was reached on Wednesday by Government to approve an extra €50m to expand the social housing second-hand acquisitions programme.

The €50m in funding nationally will be used to acquire approximately 135 homes, but almost four fifths of the funding is for Dublin —€22m for Dublin City, €10m for Fingal, €5m for South Dublin, and €2.5m for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.

Cork also received less funding than Galway city (€4m), and Limerick city and county (€3m), and just marginally more than Waterford city and county (€1.5m).

Mr Burke told The Echo: “It’s great to see this funding announced for Cork city. The funding will be specifically for households in emergency accommodation that local authorities are supporting to exit emergency accommodation to housing.

“Behind every homeless statistic is an individual or family, often with children doing their best in very difficult circumstances.

“This additional allocation of €2m to Cork City Council will be directed towards helping families to transition out of emergency accommodation and into secure housing.”
